Backpain - self-therapies

I would divide them in two groups, passive and active self-therapies. Passive self-therapies are those which do not require you to do anything else than what you are doing everyday, just to do it better. It is about correcting those poor postures I have already discussed.

Learn how to properly stand, sit down on a chair, carry luggage or weights, how to properly arrange your working place (especially for desk-jobs, computer-jobs, office-jobs, etc.). If you work with a computer it is extremely important how to position the different computer parts relative to your body: the computer monitor(screen), the keyboard, the mouse, the chair and the desk.

Learn all these and get rid of tose poor postures as soon as possible. This way you will corrct or maintain the shape of your spine.

equire you to do m Active self-therapies are those who require you to do something to improve the shape and the flexibility of your spine, to practice some disciplines. The only sport that helps is swimming, and also maybe Nordic skiing (not Alpine skiing) and long distance walking.

Also included are some specific disciplines like Pilates, stretching, and some Oriental, Eastern disciplines like Yoga, Tai Ji Quan (Tai Chi), Qi Gong and Yi Jin JIng.

Together with corrcting the poor postures and habits, best thing is to choose one of this disciplines that feels more appropriate or suited for you and practice it, because doing this you can improve your spine condition. For how long? For your whole life. Backpain is a lifelong problem, as I said it can be better called "weak spine", you have to deal with it for your whole life.

Backpain - treatment - Traditional Medicine therapies

Usually only these therapies try to fix the cause of this disease, the bad, unsuited shape of the spine.

Spinal manipulations are the most commonly used, osteopathy, chiropractic, physical therapy or physiotherapy, the Chinese version called Tuina, the Japanese version called Yumeiho, etc.. Even traction tables can be included here, being also a form of spine manipulation.

These will, with luck aand skill from the practioner, restore the normal shape of the spine.

However, it is not good to use spinal manipulation during the acute aggravated periods, because the increased inflamation and muscular contracture will act as obstacles for the manipulations.

Acupuncture and cranio sacral therapy can however be used without restrictions during acute periods, and have the same benefits as the rest.

Now, there is a also trick to all these. Even if a skilled therapist will be able to restore the proper shape to your spine, it will never be as good as new, it is not possible, and it will not keep that proper shape forever.

The reason is that when you try to bend something, first time is the the hardest, after that it becomes much more easier. Let say it took you 5-6 years of using poor to bend your spine for the first time and have spine problems, unfortunately the second time it will take less time, let s say 2-3 years (figures are relative, of course. The fact that with age the spine is loosing its flexibilty is another added factor.

Backpain - treatment - Classical Medicine therapies

Backpain is a chronic disease (it can be better called "weak back") but with acute periods of aggravation.

The usual treatment during these acute periods are antiinflammatory and muscle relaxant drugs, because the main mechanisms involved are inflamation and mucle contraction.

Termal and electrotherapy can also be useful.

In case of a slipped disk a traction table (spinal decompression table) can be useful and the disk may even, with a lot of luck, return to its proper place.

Surgery is useful especially when the intervertebral disk is broken and a part of it is loose, and that portion of the disc is removed by way of a surgical instrument or laser.

However, this will not remove the real cause of the problem, the bad, modified shape of the spine, but only the main mechanisms, inflammation and muscle contraction.

So, usually the problem will reappear, sometimes even in a different location (after succesful surgery).

The cause of backpain

Understanding the cause of backpain is very important, actually understanding is half curing.

Our spine(vertebral column) has an specific "S" shape which is designed to absorb various shocks and gravitational forces (weight) as long as it maintains that specific shape.

Young children spine still has that specific shape, and is also very flexible, so children do not suffer from backpain. However, with aging, the spine becomes less flexible, and because most people are using wrong or poor postures when standing or sitting on a chair, in time the spine will be deformed and it will loose its specific shape.

This change of shape is sufficient to cause pain by itself, but sometimes another factor of shock or stress is added, like lifting a weight the wrong way, falling down, etc. A normal spine will easily deal with these, but not a spine that lost its specific protective shape.

As a result of this, local inflamation and muscular contacture will occur, which are the main mechanisms of the back pain.

This is the cause of all the medical conditions associated with backpain: backpain, lumbago, sciatic, slipped (intervertebral) disc, spinal disc herniation, cervical spondylosis, sciatica, sciatic neuralgia or lumbar radiculopathy, and so on.

In some disciplines such as Tai Ji Quan (Tai Chi), Qi Gong (Chi Kung) or Yoga learning the correct posture is very important.

Backpain - introduction

Hello!

The purpose of this blog is to help people understand the backpain and how to cure it or deal with it. This blog has no lucrative or business purposes. I am trying only to help and guide people to get rid of this backpain, for free. I will recommend you the best available therapies to treat and cure backpain, and also what you can do yourself to prevent ot treat backpain.

I am a physician(doctor) who studied, beside Western(Occidental)medicine, also Eastern(Oriental) medicine: Chinese medicine (Acupuncture and Tuina) and Indian Medicine (Ayurveda). I also studied different other helpful therapies, disciplines or practices, like: osteopathy, craniosacral therapy, medicinal plants, massage, Qi Gong, Yi Jin Jing, Tai Ji Quan, Yoga, Yu Mei Ho. I am also one of the few Tai Ji Quan teachers in the whole world (China included) that teaches the real, traditional, old Taijiquan (what is taught and spread now is a simplified version.

Also, please be so kind to share your own experience regarding backpain, I m sure it will be helpful for the people in need.

I will try to avoid complicate medical terminology and not to use complicate medical or scientifical terms or words.

I will appreciate any tips regarding misspelling or any mispelled words, because English is not my native language.

I will also try to answer all your questions.
